Carmelite Route

Carmelite Route

The pilgrimage to Fátima is one of the most traditional manifestations of faith in Portugal. Every year, thousands of pilgrims walk to the Sanctuary of Fátima, located in the city of Fátima, to pay homage to Our Lady of Fátima . This event takes place most intensely in May and October, in celebration of the Virgin Mary's apparitions to the three shepherd children in 1917.

The Carmelite Route is a spiritual and cultural journey connecting Coimbra to the Sanctuary of Fátima, covering approximately 111 km of tranquility and natural beauty. This itinerary is perfect for those seeking a journey of faith, tranquility, and connection with nature.

Inspired by the life and legacy of Sister Lúcia , one of the three shepherdesses of Fátima, this route begins at the Carmel of Santa Teresa , in Coimbra, where Lúcia lived from 1947 until her death in 2005. The route passes through several municipalities, such as Condeixa-a-Nova, Penela, Ansião, Alvaiázere and Ourém, crossing stunning landscapes and historical sites.
